The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration spent two and a half years investigating numerous people for a possible connection to a Mexican drug cartel. Recently, two individuals were indicted on drug charges after a facility located in North Tyler, Texas, was found to be housing drug-related activity.
Documents from the DEA allege that significant amounts of methamphetamine were cleaned at the Tyler facility before being transported for sale in Dallas. DEA agents searched the property and found empty alcohol and fingernail polish bottles, which are used in the meth cleaning process. Authorities say they also discovered cocaine and weapons on the premises.
According to recent news reports, a total of 16 people have been arrested in connection with the drug operation. In total, authorities reported finding 75 firearms, 20 pounds of meth, a kilogram of cocaine and $700 in cash. Police say the group that is allegedly affiliated with the Tyler property calls itself the La Familia Drug Cartel.
The people who have been charged in connection with this case are facing serious penalties. Both of them could not only be ordered to pay a $10 million fine, but they could also be sentenced to life in prison.
When the consequences of a crime are as harsh as they are in this situation, it is imperative to understand that you are not without rights. Options exist to fight such charges in hopes of reducing or eliminating the possible penalties. However, drug crimes cases are very complex, so speaking with an experienced criminal defense attorney may be helpful.
